About #UGM

Purpose
The channel was re-opened to have a place with active mac underground chat. We chose the Undernet irc network due to its popularity, "wild west style" and ideas. The idea is for a place to ask and give support as well as daily place to chat with people that have similar interests. Topics range from mac hacking and security to daily and personal stories. We encourage everyone to visit and even idle on the chan to see what the experience is like.

Information
Brought to you by MacShadows, the channel is #ugm on the Undernet Irc network. It was originally started by Spratt_ and Vaccine, now re-opened by Spratt_, BugsBug, Omega, Vaccine, and Mancow. Everyone with good intentions and seeking or offering help is welcome to the channel. The channel has a large number of ops and members which are usually on (active or idle).

What is IRC?
What is it?
IRC ( Internet Relay Chat ) is a virtual meeting place where people from all over the world can meet and talk; you'll find the whole diversity of human interests, ideas, and issues here, and you'll be able to participate in group discussions on one of the many thousands of IRC channels, on hundreds of IRC networks, or just talk in private to family or friends, wherever they are in the world.

How do I get it?

There is many irc clients for all sorts of platforms, Ugm has a page with some mac irc clients here. A good choice for more tech-savvy users would be x-chat or bitch-x (both available for multiple platforms).
Our recommended client for mac users is an aqua/gui version of x-chat which is extensive, powerful, and easy to use, X-chat aqua is available here. There is also a new client out there called Conversation, which is a newer irc client made to look similar to iChat, it is very user-friendly.

#UGM Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What are the two status bars to the right of the input box in X-chat Aqua?
A: The status bars show the amount of lag in your connection to an irc server, if they fill up chances rae there is a network split coming.

Q: Can I be an OP?
A: Sorry, we don't need any more operators. Heck, we don't even like being operators, the bots are usually in charge.

Q: Where is everyone?
A: If you joined the channel and don't see activity, it's probably because it's a bad time. Most people on the channel on are US time zones, but if you stick around for a bit longer somebody is usually awake.

Q: Why is Mancow so weird?
A: Frankly, nobody knows. I blame ripper and his parents for corrupting his mind.

Q: Can I add my bot to #UGM?
A: No, only bots approved by channel staff will be allowed.

Q: Where does the channel's stand on asking for warez?
A: Do it outside the channel. The channel is for talk about mac security and hacking, along with daily life. If you need or want to share warez, just do it through Dialog, not in the channel.

Q: What is the purpose of the bots?
A: Well the bots manage the channel, they give people voice and op the staff when needed. They also are packed with a bunch of great information, so feel free to talk to them.
